Sam Jones had 5 goals and 4 assists while Tucker Hull had six goals and 2 assists to lead a potent Navy attack to a 14-7 win over VMI.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first five minutes, Navy scored the next seven goals to take command. VMI cut the Navy lead to 7-4, but Navy then scored three straight and never looked back.
RJ Wickham had 8 saves in goal for the Mids, who will next face Jacksonville on February 19th in a game that can be watched on the NBC Sports Network.
"It's good to experience a win," said Navy head coach Ricky Sowell. "We talked all week about how long it's been since the last Navy win (March 19, 2011 vs. Holy Cross) and it's good for these players to experience that again."
"I knew in mid-fall that our offense was going to be geared around these two," said Sowell, pointing to Hull and Jones. "They see the field well, they're both good behind the goal and they're both good off-ball."
"Our midfield played really well and drew two defenders a lot, which freed us up," said Sam Jones. "They had a lot of 'hockey assists' today."
When asked about how it seemed that the Mids pressed the attack more than in recent years, Jones said, "Coach allows us to 'play in the gray' a little more, and we tend to think of that as a 'green light' although he might disagree."
"We definitely have some things to work on - I don't think there's a coach in America that won't tell you that," said Sowell. "We did an awful lot of good things, but we have some old habits vs. new habits going on. There was a period there where we went back to some old habits. Also, we have four of our top 7 defenders playing new positions. This was their first time with the lights, camera, action for them."
