Striker Outside Linebacker
Starter: Josh Tate #41 So.
Back up: Jarvis Cummings #7 Jr.
Third String: Chris Johnson #85 So.
Player to Watch: Anthony Lewis #88 So.
Sophomore Josh Tate is the new outside striker linebacker. Tate was one of the more talented players at the Naval Academy Prep school in 2010. He is a tremendous athlete. Josh is a 5-11, 203 pounds and possesses 4.5 speed. He is built like a rock looks the part of a big time FBS football player getting off the bus. Tate is a tough, hard hitting, physical player. He was initially viewed as a potential rover after his prep year but has added 20 pounds since I-day. This is a good move for Tate since has played much more outside linebacker than safety during in his football career.
Junior Jarvis Cummings, last season's third string quarterback, played well after being moved to striker. Cummings was tired of playing second fiddle to quarterback Trey Miller. Miller beat him out of the starting quarterback job at NAPS and for the backup quarterback role at Navy. His success is not a surprise. Jarvis is very gifted athletically and, as we discussed during our "Meet the Mids" feature in 2010, he had the ability to transition to a number of positions.
Direct admit Chris Johnson has moved up to third string on the depth chart. Johnson is a 6-1, 212 pound outside linebacker. During Johnson's high school senior year he averaged over ten tackles a game. Johnson is a very good athlete with quickness and 4.53 speed in the 40 yard dash. He plays fast and is extremely athletic allowing him to slip or just run around blocks. Chris has the speed to track down plays from the backside.
A linebacker to watch is sophomore direct admit Anthony Lewis. He was a highly regarded recruit. Lewis, who is 6-0, 220 pounds, added ten pounds since last summer. He has speed and mobility but needs to improve his understanding and knowledge of the system. Anthony isn't ready yet but he's a very good athlete with a terrific upside.Follow @GoMids
