Miller, Grebe standout during Navy scrimmage

The clock is winding down as Navy rapidly approaches its 2012 season opener in Dublin, Ireland. The Midshipmen conducted their second live scrimmage of the preseason on Friday night and several players had notable performance. Look inside to find out more.

Navy quarterback Trey Miller played well in Friday's scrimmage while completing 6-of-7 passes for 104 yards and rushing for 184 yards and three scores as the Blue routed the Gold, 45-0. He had one run of 73-yards which was the highlight of the scrimmage. Miller, a junior from Marietta, Ga., handled the offense well and alleviated some concerns about the quarterback position entering the 2012 season. As a sophomore backup quarterback Miller completed 12-of-29 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 205 yards and three touchdowns. Miller accurate passing ability should help keep opponents honest and bolster the Mids' rushing attack. Navy head coach commented on Miller's performance.

"I thought Trey played okay today," said Niumatalolo. "He still missed a few checks that he can't miss and had a couple of miss reads, but we still have a couple of weeks to get that corrected."

Perhaps the biggest news of the day came in the area of special teams. After some dismal performances from potential Navy kickers in previous practices, the Mids had someone step up and kick well. Austin Grebe was 5-of-5 from field goal range and made field goals from 24, 40, 44, 48 and 50 yards. Other kicking candidates also improved in their kicking performances but none made all five kicks as Grebe did. The news is certainly welcome to Navy fans but there is still a long way to go before the trip to Ireland. Other kickers still have the opportunity to step up their game as Grebe did on Friday and Niumatalolo specifically mentioned Nick Sloan as a kicker who has been very consistent throughout practice.
