If you are astute enough to realize that the moniker ‘College Football Playoff' was put together with as much thought as the newest reality TV show (looking at you Splash) then get a load of the four logos you have to choose from. Whichever logo wins the vote will be set for 12 years from 2014 onward in a typical NCAA style move to grow the logo's brand. That means that Navy has 12 years from the move to the All American Conference to build the program and crash the playoff party (nothing wrong with dreaming big).
Here are the options:
Logo Option 1
Description: Celebrating the highest level of national athletic competition, the collegiate football's white stripes become an integral part of the American flag.
Thoughts: The timing of the voting release makes this highly patriotic logo option the early favorite. With everything that happened in Boston a new wave of national pride has swept the country and this medal inspired logo features the stars and stripes in all their glory. Plus what logo outside of something nautical could be more fitting for a fan of the Naval Academy. The font of the College Football Playoff text which seems to be hanging around the logo in an uninvited way does leave a lot to be desired however.
Logo Option 2
Description: Representing the ascent of teams to the playoffs, two gold brackets surround a 'virtual' football, and allude to the championship trophy.
Thoughts: If you like minimalism and simplicity in your logo then this is the option for you. The design is a mash up of brackets and a football with the ubiquitous College Football Playoff text sitting under it. The gold coloring should be a big hit with Notre Dame fans but it is presumably supposed to represent the dawning of a new golden age where championships are won on the field and not on a computer.
Logo Option 3
Description: American craftsmanship forged with contemporary design; inspired by the iconic shape of a football and a champion's medal, representing the historic new direction in crowning a national champion.
Thoughts: After looking through the logos at length I think this is my early favorite. Unlike the others it incorporates the text into the design and it has a very modern and organic feel to it. Again the gold is back and this time it swoops into something resembling a medal. Touches like this show the NCAA are clearly trying to push the importance of the event with this particular logo design. It may only be a little touch but I also like the fact that the year is able to be incorporated more seamlessly into this design than some of the others.
Logo Option 4
Description: A star, created by a compass with a football at its center, symbolizes the pinnacle of achievement, and the path teams follow from across the nation to the playoff.
Thoughts: Congratulations, you just unlocked an achievement. Unfortunately it comes in the form of this rather ugly compass/starfish logo hybrid. For some reason the gold has gone completely and has been replaced by a red/blue background. Who knows though, maybe this strange layering effect will be enough for gamers to jump on this option.
A quick straw poll of 26 high school seniors (the target market) produced the following results:
Logo 1: 7
Logo 2: 8
Logo 3: 11
Logo 4: 0
Most telling from this was the fact that logo four was universally disliked and many thought it looked like something a kid would design. Maybe there is some hope for the future of society after all.
