Navy soccer elects Davis as captain

It's one thing to be assigned as a leader but there is not greater honor than to be elected as a leader by your peers. Zach Davis, a rising senior for the United States Naval Academy soccer team, recently received that honor as he was elected team captain by his teammates.

Zach Davis certainly has the qualities you'd want in a team leader. He's a stellar student with a 3.54 GPA and on the field he's force for the Mids. Davis, a Colorado Springs, Colo., native earned All-Patriot League Tournament team honors during his sophomore season and was a member of the Holiday Inn Express BWI All-Tournament team as a junior a year ago.

Navy head coach Dave Brandt has been impressed with Davis since he first arrived in Annapolis.

"Zach has been a team leader on and off the field in many ways since he arrived at the Naval Academy as a freshman," said Brandt. "I am excited to work with him as captain of our team this fall, and excited about the leadership potential of that whole class for us, which has been an influential one for us on the field since they arrived at Navy in the fall of 2010."

Davis sees the 2013 season as a chance for Navy soccer do improve and do something special.

"Personally, I'm looking forward to the opportunity to be captain. Within the team, I'll be sharing the responsibilities with the other seniors as well. During my time on the team, I've had the opportunity to learn from the excellent captains and other teammates that have gone on to graduate," said Davis. "This year, however, I think we are more prepared than ever before for a number of guys to step up and act as credible, influential leaders on the team. The more guys we have stepping up to dedicate themselves to do as much as possible for the team and working to provide a great example for their teammates, the better our chances are for success."

Navy soccer, which finished 7-7-3 in 2012, should certainly be improved. The Mids return over 80 percent of their scoring. Seven Mid starters and 19 letter winners return. Add in new captain Zach Davis and that should be a recipe for championships. Top Stories
