2013 Navy as Seen by the National Media

It is about that time of year again when the college football preview magazines reach the middle of their preseason countdown and Navy finds themselves shoehorned in amongst the lower echelon BCS teams and higher thought of non-BCS squads. It is about that time of year again when the college football preview magazines reach the middle of their preseason countdown and Navy finds themselves shoehorned in amongst the lower echelon BCS teams and higher thought of non-BCS squads. With 125 in the FBS this season the countdowns started earlier than ever, but as usual Mid-July is the time that the Mids show up. Here is a look at what some national publications think of the Academy as we enter the 2013 season.

Athlon Sports - 66th

Key quote - "Keenan Reynolds displayed tremendous poise, presence and instincts along with a strong, accurate throwing arm while starting eight games as a freshman. Navy, while still a triple-option team at heart, will work out of the shotgun formation more in 2013 to take advantage of Reynolds' abilities."

Athlon Sports has picked up on the fact that the Navy offense will be noticeably different this fall. The publication makes Reynolds the focus of their piece and includes quotes with Ken Niumatalolo talking the young quarterback up while mentioning that Navy is looking to bring spread offense principles to Annapolis to take advantage of everything Reynolds can do.

Athlon ranks only four of Navy's opponent's as being better than the Mids this fall with only Notre Dame (8th) being huge favorites. Pitt, Indiana, and San Jose State were all ranked between 52nd and 63rd, while four of the Academy's foes were ranked 90th or lower including Army who are 113th.

USA Today - 60th

Key Quote - "Navy is again an eight-win team and the cream of the crop in the chase for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy. Little has changed. Well, some things have changed: Navy has some new faces at running back, left guard, defensive end, linebacker and free safety. By and large, however, and surprisingly, given the program's eternal personnel turnover, this team seems very similar to the one that made a late charge in the second half of last season's schedule."

Bonus Key Quote - "The best news comes at quarterback, where Navy has found a multiple-year starter with the drive, precociousness, energy and overall talent to rewrite the school's record book."

The USA Today piece is far more in depth and covers everything from a breakdown of last season to Navy's dominant position in the chase for the CIC Trophy. The piece makes a case that Navy should go 8-4 without breaking too much of a sweat and that if Reynolds makes the jump that is expected of him, after calling him the most impactful true freshman in the country a year ago, a 10-2 season is far from out of the question.

Phil Steele on Navy (no ranking)

"I am excited about what Reynolds can do at QB for this Navy squad and they are deep at most positions with one of their more veteran units. Niumatalolo is doing a great job and will have Navy back in their 10th bowl in 11 years (5 out of 6 under him)."
