Navy 2013 Football Review: Special Teams

Navy football spring practice begins on March 17. Before spring drills kick off will review the 2013 team, unit by unit. In this segment we look at the special teams

Navy kicker Nick Sloan has hit 10-of-14 field goals this season. Sloan has missed four extra points. Against Toledo Sloan hit a clutch 40-yard field goal to force overtime. Sloan went from hero to goat when he missed an extra point after Whiteside scored to give Navy a 44-38 lead in the second overtime which cost Navy the chance to win.

Punter Pablo Beltran had a tremendous year averaging 41.4 yards per punt on his 40 punts with 12 placed inside the 20-yard line. Beltran earned honorable mention All-East for his play.

Marcus Thomas is averaging 23.5 yards per kickoff return and earned honorable mention All-East honors. Punt returner Shawn Lynch produced 7.4 yards per punt return. Navy's coverage teams where outstanding all year. It probably can he attributed to the depth and overall improved team speed. This was the best coverage units, 19.8 yards per return on kickoffs and 6.5 on punt returns, that I can remember Navy fielding. Top Stories
