Baltimore receiver has Navy offer

Jelani Roberts received an offer from Navy, his first, and is waiting to hear more from the staff of the Midshipmen. The 5-foot-8, 160-pound wide receiver plays at The Gilman School, which is recognized as the finest preparatory school in the Baltimore area and known for having a strong football program under head coach Biff Poggi.

"My head coach went to Navy with a senior, Chibuzo Ukandu, and when he came back he told me they offered me," Roberts told "This was a couple of months ago and I have not heard yet from them. It was great to get the offer. They have outstanding academics so that has to be considered.

"Right now, I'm receiving the most interest from Ivy League schools like Princeton, Penn, and Cornell. I went up to Penn junior day and really liked it. I'm going to Princeton this weekend. I have a number of letters from Boston College, Maryland, Michigan State, Missouri, and Syracuse.

"I'm looking to go to a university with good academics, especially one with a strong Engineering program. I want to go to a program that runs an offensive that fits with someone my size."

Roberts is a speedster who plays in the slot. At the Nike Combine in Massillon, Ohio, Roberts ran a 4.39 forty yard dash on the gun and scored a 112 Sparq score.

"This was my first year as a starter at Gilman," he said. "I felt like my skills [at receiver] improved throughout the year. I just want to keep getting better in my senior season. I'm also the kick and put returned and I think I took five kicks back for touchdowns last season."

Gilman went 7-3 in 2013. Roberts was named first team All-Conference at wide receiver. He plans on returning to Ohio for a Nike Training Camp this summer, but is unsure at this time when he will visit Annapolis or other possible summer camps. Top Stories
