Navy in 2013: Pivot Points, Part Three

In the third subsection of Navy's 2013 season, the Midshipmen's best performance was actually the one game in which they actually lost. Here are the game-flow details of Navy's seventh, eighth and ninth FBS games from the past season.


PIVOT POINTS: NOTRE DAME, HAWAII, SOUTH ALABAMA

NOTRE DAME

-- Notre Dame scores a touchdown on its first drive. Navy promptly responds. 7-7.

-- Navy’s defense holds Notre Dame to three points on the Fighting Irish’s next two possessions. Navy’s offense scores a touchdown to take a 14-10 lead.

-- Notre Dame scores a touchdown on its next possession, producing three plays of at least 17 yards. The Irish take a 17-14 lead.

-- Navy scores a touchdown, converting a third and six, but it misses the PAT. 20-17, Midshipmen.

-- Navy’s defense gets an interception at its own 27 before the half.

-- Navy’s offense can’t score on its first drive of the second half, and the Midshipmen punt.

-- Notre Dame scores a touchdown on its next possession without facing a third down. 24-20, Irish.

-- Navy answers with a touchdown on its next drive, converting a fourth and four and then a third and goal at the 4. 27-24, Navy.

-- With the offenses completely controlling the flow of play, Notre Dame answers with a touchdown on its next possession. The Fighting Irish once again avoid facing a single third down. 31-27, Notre Dame.

-- Navy scores a touchdown on its next possession, converting a third and seven in the process. 34-31, Navy, midway through the fourth quarter.

-- Notre Dame scores a touchdown in response. On one of the two key plays of the game, the Irish convert a third and eight to sustain their drive. 38-34, Notre Dame, with just under four minutes left in the game.

-- Notre Dame stops Navy’s end-around to the wide side of the field, preserving its victory and giving the Midshipmen a wrenching loss on a day when they played extremely well.

HAWAII

-- Navy recovers a fumbled punt and scores a touchdown for a 7-0 lead.

-- Navy’s defense gets a red-zone stop and Hawaii misses a field goal.

-- Later, Hawaii ties the game at 7-all with a touchdown. Navy scores a touchdown on the next possession, though, converting a third and 10.

-- Hawaii scores a touchdown just before halftime, making the score 14-14 at the intermission.

-- Navy’s offense scores a touchdown on its first drive of the second half. 21-14, Navy.

-- Navy’s defense forces a Hawaii punt in four plays.

-- Navy’s offense scores a touchdown on its next possession, converting a third and nine. 28-14, Midshipmen.

-- Navy’s defense forces a three-and-out.

-- After Navy’s offense is stopped on fourth and goal at the 1, Hawaii drives 99 yards for a touchdown in 18 plays, converting a fourth and three. 28-21, Navy, early in the fourth quarter.

-- Navy scores on a 67-yard touchdown run to immediately push its lead back to two scores at 35-21.

-- Hawaii answers with a 13-play touchdown drive, converting a fourth and goal at the Navy 6. The Warriors trim their deficit to 35-28 with 4:36 left in the game.

-- Navy’s offense counters with a touchdown on its next possession, converting a third and four before salting the game away with seven more points. The score is 42-28 with under two minutes left. Navy isn’t bothered the rest of the way.

SOUTH ALABAMA

-- Late in the first quarter, South Alabama produces a touchdown drive of 14 plays, converting a fourth and three. The Jaguars take a 7-3 lead.

-- Navy’s offense scores a touchdown on its next possession. 10-7, Midshipmen.

-- South Alabama scores a touchdown on its next possession. The Jaguars do not face any third downs longer than one yard on the drive. 14-10, University of South Alabama (otherwise known as “USA”).

-- Navy scores a touchdown on its next drive. 17-14, Navy.

-- Later, Navy settles for a field goal inside the USA 5-yard line, establishing a narrow 20-14 lead before halftime.

-- Navy’s offense scores a touchdown on its first drive of the second half, converting a third and 14 in the process. 27-14, Midshipmen.

-- With Navy leading by multiple scores, the focus of the second half becomes the Midshipmen’s defense. Navy shuts out South Alabama in the second half. The highlight is a stop of the Jaguars on third and two and then fourth and two at the Navy 4. USA is denied points on a 20-play drive which bridged the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth quarter.
