Local star has Navy interest

Navy is showing strong interest in a player right in the own back yard. Monte Jones lives in Annapolis and attends St. Mary's High School in the downtown, just a few blocks away from the U.S. Naval Academy. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound athlete projects at running back, slot receiver, or somewhere in the secondary at the D-1 level.

Monte Jones Bio

In addition to Navy's interest, Jones, a 2016 prospect, is hearing from Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State, Maryland, and UVA.

"I've had really a lot of interest from Navy," Jones told GoMids.com. "They'd told me to stayed focused on my grades and to keep in touch. I love Navy. It's, literally, right down the street from me. I've been there a lot. Last year, I was invited by the staff to the Pitt game. I've always been interested in staying home going to the academy. I always thought that's something I'd want to do. I have family ties. My uncle works there. Lately, I've been thinking more and more about it. Right now my GPA is at 2.9. I've really crackdown since I started talking to schools like Navy and Georgetown."

"A lot of the D-1 colleges I've talked to like me at strong safety. Ohio State said they like me at slot or running back. This summer, I went to camps at Ohio State and Michigan State and they invited to go on a private tour afterward. They're both showing interest. Ohio State told me I'm a good player and asked which other schools were looking at me. They said to keep looking at Ohio State and invited me back to a game this fall. I'm hearing a lot from some FCS schools like Georgetown, who asked for my SAT scores, Liberty, was also very interested, and I talked a long time with the coaches at ODU, who'll be moving up to the FBS."

In his sophomore season, Jones was named All-State in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). He played a rover linebacker and racked up 115 tackles on the 10 game season. This year, Jones says he'll remain at defense but will be featured more in the running game.

"In the off-season, I've worked hard on my conditioning to be able to play the entire game both ways," he said. "I'm increasing my speed. I know my a lot faster than where I was last year at this time. I'm going out there to be more of a leader. I need to do what I can to help our team get better each week.

"With recruiting, hoping a school that I really love will offer me. Location really doesn't matter. If one of the schools around here like Navy or Georgetown offered, I'd seriously consider staying at home, but I might want to get away for college. For me, it's really just about connecting with the people at the school, the players and the coaches. If they have that with top tier academics then I'd be very interested in going there."

Other schools that have expressed interest in Jones include Michigan, Ohio, Temple, and Tennessee State. Jones is definitely a Maryland junior to keep a close eye on with offers this fall at St. Mary's.
