Navy Spring Review: Kickers

Navy recently completed its spring drills.’s Jim Lawler will now review every Midshipmen position and name a starter, a backup and a third string player to watch. In this segment he reviews the kickers.

Navy kicker Austin Grebe finished the season as Mr. Perfect after replacing struggling kicker Nick Sloan. Grebe hit all six of his field goal attempts and all 33 of his extra points. He hit the game winning field goal against San Diego State in the bowl game. Grebe was named honorable mention All FBS Independent. Nick Sloan hit just 3-of-8 field goal attempts last season before losing his job. He had costly misses in three straight games against Rutgers, Western Kentucky and Air Force. He made only two of six field goal attempts over forty yards before being replaced by Grebe. Sloan hit 11-of-14 field goals in 2013 but fell apart last year.

Austin Grebe continues to serve as the kickoff specialist. Last year he Grebe had 20 touchbacks on his 71 kickoffs. In 2013 he had 16 touchbacks on 76 kickoffs. His back up on kickoffs remains Gavin Jernigan . Jernigan (6-3”, 203) has a strong leg. At Chris Sailer Kicking camp after his junior year Jernigan was awarded the camp's kickoff champion award.
