Looking At The Navy Midshipmen Opponents: Fordham Rams

What You Need To Know: Fordham is not the sort of FCS team that you can put on the schedule and just forget about. The Rams may have a first year head coach, and a 31-year old head coach at that, in Andrew Breiner, but Fordham is absolutely loaded on the offensive side of the ball. The Rams return all the skill position players that matter from Joe Moorhead's offense in 2015. That offense tore up FCS and FBS schools on its way to a third consecutive FCS Playoffs appearance. Moorhead moved on

In this series we will look at the Mids football opponents for the 2016 season. Today the school we are looking at is Fordham.

Date/time/location/TV: September 3, noon, Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Annapolid, Md., CBS Sports Net

2015 Record: 9-3 (5-1 Patriot). Lost in first round of the FCS Playoffs.

Head Coach: Andrew Breiner. First year at Fordham.

Series History: Navy leads 1-0.

Last Meeting: It's been a while. The Mids last (and only) game against Fordham was played on November 7, 1914. Navy won the game 21-0 in Annapolis.

Top Returners: RB Chase Edmonds (Sr.) 3,436 yards rushing and 43 rushing touchdowns in two seasons. QB Kevin Anderson (Sr.) 3,183 yards passing and 32 passing touchdowns in 2015. Top five WR in the passing attack.

Key Losses: LB Stephen Hodge, 119 tackles, 11.5 TFLs, 2.5 sacks, 3 interceptions in 2015.

Moorhead moved on to become the offensive coordinator at Penn State, but Breirner served as the OC and QB's coach for Moorhead so he knows the system inside out.

The star player here is RB Chase Edmonds. Edmonds was the 2015 Patriot League Player of the Year and was recently named as a FCS preseason All-American. Edmonds scored 25 touchdowns last fall, with his breakout performance coming in a game against Lehigh when he rushed (31 times) and caught passes (twice) to end the day with four touchdowns and 402 yards of total offense. Edmonds and QB Kevin Anderson give the Rams the best QB/RB pairing in the entire FCS.

On defense the Rams will miss OLB Stephen Hodge. Hodge was a do everything player for Fordham who would make plays that few others would have done because of his sheer desire to help the team. Even without Hodge however, this is a Fordham team that is picked not only to win the Patriot League, but to make a serious run at the FCS National Title. This is not exactly the kind of squad Navy would ideally open the season against.

2015 Stats That Matter (FCS): Points per game, 9th; Passing efficiency, 2nd.

Fun Fact: The Rose Hill Gymnasium on campus was used as an Army barracks during World War II.

Famous Alumni: Vince Lombardi (NFL Coaching Legend), Alan Alda (TV Star), Andrew Cuomo (Governor of New York), Denzel Washington (Actor).

Famous Dropouts: Donald Trump (decided he was too good for the school), Amanda Seyfried (offered her role in Mean GIrls after one day on campus), David Copperfield (took a part in Chicago based musical Magic Man three weeks into his freshman year).

Heard On The Sidelines: Athletic director Dave Roach about the hire of Breiner.

“We believe that he is one of the bright young coaches who has done a great job guiding the record-setting offense over the past four years. He has been a big part of the program’s recent success and we are confident that Andrew will be able to maintain and build upon that success going forward.”
