LAX: Russell named defensive player of the week

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Returning First-Team All-American and Kelly Award (national goalkeeper of the year) winner Matt Russell (Madison, Conn.) garnered Patriot League Lacrosse Defensive Player-of-the-Week recognition Tuesday in what was the league's first batch of weekly award winners.

Russell, who is among 37 players named to the 2005 Tewaaraton Award Foundation's watch list, has led Navy to a pair of early-season victories, including an 11-5 decision over 14th-ranked Ohio State last Saturday on the road. The junior keeper produced a combined 15 saves in two contests, while boasting a .682 save percentage in nearly 118 minutes of action. The second-year starter owns a 16-2 career record in goal.

Giving up 3.50 goals per game, Russell and his Midshipmen teammates will play their home opener Saturday when sixth-ranked North Carolina travels to Annapolis. Game time is set for 12-Noon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
