Navy and Vanderbilt lead for McCarthy

Mike McCarthy is an outstanding defensive tackle/offensive lineman from Stongsville, Ohio who is strong on the football field as well as in the classroom. Although McCarthy is awaiting an offer, several programs have expressed an interest in him. McCarthy recently discussed his recruiting situation with

Navy, Air Force, Virginia Military, Virginia Tech and Kansas are all schools that have an interest in Mike McCarthy and for good reasons. McCarthy is a versatile lineman who can play a wide variety of positions, including defensive end, defensive tackle and center and just about all the offensive line positions.

McCarthy, who is also a star wrestler who qualified for the state tournament as a junior, feels his speed and great conditioning is what attracts interest from college recruiters, "I'm a lot leaner, I'm a wrestler as well so I'm a lot faster than the other guys. I'm durable," said McCarthy.

A hard worker, McCarthy plans on a busy summer to improve his game and will camp at Vanderbilt, Ohio State, Navy, Cincinnati, and several MAC schools. He has a forty speed that is impressive for a lineman of 5.2 seconds and he benches 280 pounds and squats 450.

Last season at Strongsville McCarthy excelled and earned honorable mention All-Pioneer Conference honors after garnering 29 pancake blocks. He also won the Pioneer Conference Championship as a wrestler in the heavyweight class. McCarthy is planning on a career in the Navy so all the schools he is considering offer some kind of military officers commissioning program. On Thursday McCarthy named his top 4 schools, which include, in order of preference, Navy, Vanderbilt, Air Force and Virginia Tech. He is also hearing from Kansas and VMI.

Navy- "Navy has contacted me a lot and I've very interested in them. It's been a life long passion for me to go to the Naval Academy. I want to go in the Navy; that's a career I want to pursue. My father and grandfather served in the Navy." McCarthy camped at Navy last summer.

Vanderbilt- "I'm going down to Vanderbilt. I like Vanderbilt because it's south. I'm from the south and I want to go back home. It has a really great engineering school and that is something I want to pursue in college. I would certainly like to hear more from them."

Air Force- "Air Force has been in contact with me some too. I've been working on getting nominations from my Congressman."

Virginia Tech- "I'd like to hear from them."

Kansas- "I've got some stuff from them. They do have a Navy ROTC progam and they play in the Big 12. There is some prestige there."
