First Team Defense

DE:     Brandon Thompson                Army

Comments: This was a tough call because Thompson has yet to play a full season due to injuries.  However, if the senior can stay healthy he will help take the sting out of Army losing Cameron Craig.

DT:     Nate Frazier                           Navy

Comments: Frazier is a beast and you better believe playing against Antron Harper all spring made him a better player.  If Navy has any hope of pressuring the quarterback, it lies with their heralded sophomore.

DT:     Tony Fusco                             Army

Comments: Fusco is starting for his third year and with Iowa-transfer Tim Bentler providing relief this may be Army's strongest position which would be a big improvement from last season.

DE:     Jake Paulson                          Air Force

Comments: If Paulson and his 6'5", 260 pound frame can make a smooth adjustment to Air Force's 3-4 defense, he could have a big year.  The only question is whether or not he can stop the run consistently.

LB:      Drew Fowler                          Air Force

Comments: Fowler would probably start on 95% of all Division I-A schools – maybe more.  Good luck to whoever draws the assignment to block him.  Expect to see him average double-digit tackles per game.

LB:      Charlie Rockwood                 Army

Comments: Army's success may very well depend on Rockwood and his ability to help stop opponents from running at will on the Black Knights.  He has the size and big-play ability, but will he get the support he needs?

LB:      Clint Sovie                             Navy

Comments: If he can play like another Navy inside linebacker named Clint (Bruce '97), then Mids will be just fine up the middle on defense.  He just needs to be more consistent.

LB:      John Rabold                          Air Force

Comments: Air Force moves Rabold back to linebacker in their new defensive scheme. Expect to see a lot of him on the line giving support to the pass rush.

CB:     Rashawn King                        Navy

Comments: With the departure of Keenan Little to graduation and Jeromy Miles to UMass, King becomes Navy's most experienced pass defender.  He had 16 tackles in back-to-back games last year.

CB:     John Laird                              Army

Comments: Laird gets the slight edge here over Air Force's Rybak based mainly on a better 2006 season and more experience.  If Army can improve against the run, Laird will get tested often.

S:         Caleb Campbell                     Army

Comments: As talented as any player on this team.  A torn ACL and MCL ended his 2006 season early, but if he is fully recovered, expect him to lead Army in tackles – and big plays.

S:         Bobby Giannini                      Air Force

Comments: Giannini just barely out-polled Navy's Deliz because of a better resume to date.  If shift to 3-4 allows Giannini to concentrate more on pass support then he should enjoy a solid year.
