Navy Football 2007: Linebackers

The Navy football team is hard at work preparing for the 2007 season. Linebacker is a crucial position. Starters for several spots will have to be decided before Navy tangles with Temple in less than four weeks. A good group of freshmen 'backers hope to make an impact. Here's a look at the Navy linebacker situation.

Outside Linebacker

9 Matt Humiston (5-11, 207, Sr.)- Saw action in all 13 games racking up 10 tackles. Finished spring drills as one of the starting outside linebackers.
49 Craig Schaefer (6-2, 215, So.)- Schaefer, an up and coming player for Robinson Secondary in Virginia, battled his way into the backup sprt for one outside 'backer position.
6 Dell Robinson (5-11, 215, Sr.)- Played in 8 games last season.

Outside Linebacker

54 Matt Wimsatt (6-1, 216, Sr.)- Saw action in all 13 games. Had 6 tackles including 1 tackle for loss. Finished in dead heat with M. Nechak for the starting position.
59 Matt Nechak (6-4, 244, So.)- Emerging sophomore from Malibu, Calif. has impressive size. Finished tied for the starting spot with Wimsatt.
52 Jordan Eddington (6-0, 225, So.)- Another talented sophomore who could see action in 2007.
40 Ian Meredith (6-3, 229, So.)- Sophomore from Tennessee hopes to see action in the fall.

Inside Linebacker

44 * Clint Sovie (5-11, 201, Jr.)- Started 9 games during the 2006 season. Sixth leading tackler for Navy in 2006 with 61. Navy's most experienced returning linebacker.
50 Tony Haberer (6-1, 229, So.)- Texan is slated to backup Sovie after a solid spring.
51 Ross Pospisil (6-0, 223, So.)- Another Texan who hopes to help Navy win in 2007.

Inside Linebacker

55 Irv Spencer (6-0, 238, Sr.)- Started 4 games during the 2006 season in relief of Clint Sovie. Had 27 tackles and 2 forced fumbles. Has seen action in 25 games for Navy over his career.
58 Jonathan Alvarado (6-2, 227, Sr.)- Saw action in just 4 games in 2006 but produced well, picking up 1.5 tackles for loss including 1 sack.
96 Alex Horne (6-0, 223, Jr.)- Junior from North Carolina hopes to work his way to a starting position during preseason workouts.
