Ken Laplante: Checking Out Navy

Holmdel High standout, Ken Laplante, truly has a knack for excelling on the field, as well as in the classroom. As a result, he has been drawing interest from several prestigious programs across the country, including the Naval Academy. recently spoke with Laplante to see how things have been going on the recruiting front. Come inside to get the scoop.

"Everything has been going really well," the Holmdel High DE/FB said in regards to his recruitment. "I've been getting a lot of interest from several Ivy League schools. I've also been getting letters from a few other schools like Syracuse, Temple, and the Naval Academy."

LaPlante told that the Midshipmen started expressing interest in him immediately after they had a chance to view his highlight film. "My coach was at a clinic in Atlantic City," LaPlante said. "While he was out there, he ran into the coach from the Naval Academy, and he handed him a copy of my highlight tape to look at. Everything pretty much started from there."

Last fall LaPlante ran for over 700 yards and 9 rushing touchdowns from his fullback position. He also came up big on the defensive side of the ball with 10 sacks and 15 TFL.

The Holmdel two-way star will be looking to increase those numbers next fall during his senior campaign. So in an effort to do so, he has been working on a very extensive off-season plan. "I've been lifting heavily three times a week," LaPlante said. "Since I'm not playing a sport right now, I've been working out on Tuesdays and Thursdays at one of the local training facilities."

Outside of working out, Ken has been spending a lot of time on the road, checking out some of the programs that have been expressing interest in him. He has already taken a handful of unofficial visits, and plans on taking several more. With that being said, there is a great possibility of him showing up on Navy's doorstep sometime this spring.

"I've visited a few Ivy League Schools," LaPlante said. "I've been to Penn, Princeton, Brown, Lehigh, and Dartmouth so far. There is a chance that I'll be going south to visit a couple of schools. I'll probably visit schools like William and Mary and Duke. On the way back, I'll probably stop by to see Navy as well."

When asked about his familiarity with the Naval Academy, LaPlante seemed fairly knowledgeable. "I know the basics requirements of the program," he said. "I pretty much know the gist of it. I also know that they are an excellent school academically, and academics are very big for me. I am certainly considering them as a possibility."
