Navy Preview 2008: Defensive Backs

As part of's continuing preview of the 2008 Navy football season today will take a look at the defensive backs. The Mids open their 2008 season on August 30th against Towson in Annapolis.

Overview: The Navy coaching staff will surely list the Midshipmen secondary as one of the top priorities for improvement in 2008. This unit was riddled with injuries and youth that helped make for some high scoring games. With an abundance of experience returning expect this group to make significant strides.

Starters lost:


Returning starters:


Ketric Buffin (5-7, 168, Sr.)- Started 7 games in 2007 in the secondary.
Blake Carter (5-11, 185, Jr.)- Started 9 games. Had 71 tackles including 2 for losses and 1 pass broken up.
Rashawn King (6-0, 180, Sr.)- Started 10 games in 2007. Missed 3 games because of injury. Finished with 53 tackles, fumble recovery and an interception.


Wyatt Middleton (6-0, 192, So.)- Started 9 games at rover/safety in 2007. One of the few Mids to play as a freshman. Finished with 88 tackles and 1 pass broken up. Had 1 tackle for a loss.

Others to watch:


John Angelo (5-9, 176, So.)- Finished No. 3 on the depth chart at left cornerback after spring drills.
David Dawson (5-9, 172, Jr.)- Hard working junior who hopes to see playing time in 2008.
Kevin Edwards (6-2, 173, So.)- Started 3 games in 2007. Edwards saw significant action as a freshman. Had 27 tackles including 2 for losses and 2 pass break ups.
Darius Terry (5-7, 168, Jr.)- Finished 2007 with 17 tackles and 2 pass break ups.


Joe Davis (6-0, 186, So.)- Rising sophomore.
Jeff Deliz (5-11, 195, Sr.)- Had 2 starts in 2007.
James Howell (5-8, 175, So.)- Hard working sophomore.
Jesse Iwuji (6-1, 182, Jr.)- Stated 3 games in 2007.
Kevin Snyder (5-11, 182, Sr.)- Started Wake Forest game at rover in 2007.
Joey Taylor (6-0, 196, Sr.)- Played in 6 games. Had 1 tackle.
Darius Terry (5-7, 168, Jr.)- Saw action in 9 games and finished with 17 tackles, 2 tackles for losses and 2 passes broken up.
Jason Wright (6-1, 190, So.)- Developing sophomore.

Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo comments

"We have a good group coming back in the secondary and I am expecting a big year out of them. If we are able to rush the passer a little bit and give these guys a chance, I think they will step up and have a big year."
