Head to head: Navy vs. SMU

Next up for Navy is SMU. Today GoMids.com compares different critical team areas of Navy and SMU and indicates which team has the edge.

Navy rushing offense
SMU rushing defense
Big Navy advantage here. The Mids have fallent to fourth nationally in rushing offense but 296 yards a game is still an incredible number. The Mustangs defense is surrendering 215 yards a game on the ground and should see that average go up significantly after their game with the Mids.
Navy passing offense
SMU passing defense
Navy doesn't pass too much and averages about 70 yards a game through the air. That said, you can't fall asleep on the Navy passing attack or you may get burned for a big gain. SMU is 117th nationally in pass efficiency defense and 113th nationally in passing yards per game allowed.

Navy and SMU are the exact opposites of each other offensively. SMU rarely runs and almost always passes. Heach coach June Jones brought his pass happy attack from Hawaii. The Mustang's leading ground gainer is running back Chris Butler (157 yds total for season) who did not play in SMU's 44-38 loss to Houston.

SMU edge here. The Mustangs are led by freshman quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell who passed for 365 yards, 4 touchdowns and two interceptions against Houston on Saturday. Mitchell's top target is Aldrick Robinson who has 46 catches on the season. Navy has improved but still lacks a formidable passing defense and are allowing 260 per game to their opponents.
Special Teams
Navy's Matt Harmon has connected on an impressive 14 of 15 field goals this season. The Mustang's Thomas Morstead has made 6 of 8 of his attempts. SMU has an outstanding punting game (38 net yards per punt) while Navy excels in returning punts (27th nationally).
Navy's Ken Niumatalolo is 4-4 in his fist season with the Mids. June Jones (77-48) is in his 10th year of coaching and in 2007 coached Hawaii to an undefeated regular season. He is 1-7 in his first season with SMU.
