PASSING OFFENSE
A-
Nice job by Ricky Dobbs who completed 5 of 8 passes for 103 yards and no interceptions. He had a fine, 38-yard, completion to Gary Myers. Whenever an option team can truly pass too, watch out!
RUSHING OFFENSE
B
Louisiana Tech did a decent job stopping Navy's run. Tech only allowed the Mids 290 yards rushing. The longest run of the day was just 18 yards. That run was by Marcus Curry, who finished with 124 on the day. Navy knows they can do much better than this.
PASSING DEFENSE
A
Excellent job of the Navy defense stopping Tech's passing attack. Navy limited Bulldog quarterback Ross Jenkins to just 156 yards passing and sacked him four times. Defensive end Jabaree Tuani had an interception as a big help to Navy's cause.
RUSHING DEFENSE
A
Navy did even better against the Tech rushing game. After giving up an early rushing score to the Bulldogs, Navy essentially shut down Tech's rushing game holding them to just 11 yards in 17 carries. Of course the four sacks helped to make their rushing yards worse. Great job by linebackers Tyler Simmons and Ross Pospisil who combined for 13 tackles.
SPECIAL TEAMS
B
Yes, there was the breakdown on the punt return coverage that resulted in the long punt return for a score, however, Navy's special teams were otherwise pretty good. Kyle Delahooke punted for a 48-yard average. Joe Buckley made one of two field goals including a 43-yarder.
COACHING
A
Things looked ugly early but Ken Niumatalolo and his staff got things under control and picked up Navy's first victory of the 2009 season. Nice job taking advantage of Dobbs passing ability to offset Tech's concentration on Navy's running game. Great work by Buddy Green in making adjustments and shutting down the Bulldogs after their early success.
OVERALL GRADE
A-
No team wants to fall behind early in a game but come back victories are good character builders. This team's veterans already know how to come back in a game so this is more of a positive experience for the plebes. Louisiana Tech is a pretty good football team and this victory was fairly lopsided for Navy which indicates that the Mids have the ability to do great things the rest of the season starting at Pittsburgh on Saturday.
