An emotional game

There is nothing like a cross-town or in the case of Arlington (Texas) Sam Houston and Bowie they are "right up the street" from one another. There really isn't a lot of distance between high schools and sometimes that can lead to some bitterness. According to Jamal Turner, the two teams are really friends off the field, but there is a lot of trash being talked about this game.

The most quotable player in the 2011 class for Nebraska has to be Jamal Turner. He will tell you what is going on right now and he has a way of framing it that makes every Nebraska fan smile.

"School is keeping me busy," Turner said. "I was up studying late a couple of nights this week. I had a big pre-calculus class on Tuesday. I think that I did pretty good. I am ready to be done and get to Nebraska."

Before he goes to Nebraska there is a game that he has to play this Friday night. This isn't an ordinary game either. This game is against Arlington Texas Bowie.

"I know, I am excited about this game. This is a special game. For one, they are right up the street. They made this a little I-20 Bowl to get more people to come out and see it.

"Friends and kids down the street choose which school they are going to go to. It's either Bowie or Sam. We are all in the same area, but go to different school. It's been this way for years."

If it wasn't emotional enough Jamal's brother, Richard Williams, talked Jamal out of going to Bowie over Sam Houston. At the young age of 21 years, Richard was killed in a motorcycle accident.

"I was going to go there had it not been for the encouragement of my older brother. I am going to go out there and play a little harder for that reason."

Turner says that there are usually neighborhood places and businesses where he goes when he will see people from Bowie. They are all friends, but before this game there is a lot of talking going on.

"We see each other all the time and the talk is non-stop. Either team could have the worst team in the district and in this game, against the other school they are going to play their hardest. They are going to make it a game.

"And they are talking, they are talking a lot this year and it's crazy. We're friends though, we are all friends. But we won't be friendly for the 60 minutes that we will be on the field against them."

Turner has a lot going for him right now. Sam Houston is off to a pretty good start, 2-2 and 1-0 in district, but Turner is tearing up Texas 5A. Turner is the leading rusher for 5A in Dallas with 85 rushes for 725 yards and 10 touchdowns. He's adding 42-for-82 passing for 420 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

"Wow, I didn't know all of that until you just told me. Every time I am running the football I am thinking touchdown and I am thinking big plays. I am running for the seniors and to get us to playoffs. There are a number of seniors on the team that deserve to make the playoffs and I am going to do all that I can to get us there."
