Press Conference Notes

Check out some notes from today's press conference as the Huskers get ready to hit the road to take on Texas A&M. It's the game that if Nebraska wins it, they will clinch the Big 12 North and punch their ticket to Dallas for the second year in a row.

Press Conference Notes

  • Bo was approached right off the bat about the fans, and I guess he had enough of it. Because he said he wasn't going to talk about it. However, after the point had become a bit humorous, someone asked him if he thought Nebraska fans could use a cheer practice similar to what is done down at Texas A&M. Bo just smiled, shook his head and we moved on.
  • On Aggie Head Coach Mike Sherman, Pelini obviously coached under Sherman while at Green Bay. But he said that knowing what Sherman did then as a pro coach, would be different than now. He expects nothing all that similar.
  • A momentary chance to reflect, Bo said "I wish we had one more win than we have now." He said later that he didn't look back. But I figure you can get what he meant earlier.
  • In regard to some of the issues Nebraska has had on offense, Bo talked about that as something that's been kind of sporadic. But turnovers and things like that have had a habit of coming back. The Huskers lead the country in fumbles with 33. That's not fumbles lost, but just balls put on the ground. In fumbles lost, the Huskers have 13, which puts them two fumbles away from being tied for last there, as well. "It kind of crept up on us the other day. We'll keep talking about it," Pelini said.
  • On Austin Cassidy, the junior safety who has started the last three games: "He's played good football, He's smart. He's tackled well. He's prepared himself well. It's one thing to do it in practice; it's another when it's happening for real."
  • When asked about his time coaching down at College Station when he was at Oklahoma in 2004, Pelini was obviously very complimentary, saying "It's a great environment. It's loud, and it's a really good environment." But when pressed to compare Aggie fans with Husker fans, Pelini said with a grin "Our fans are better…."
  • On the positives of getting Martinez back for Kansas: "You didn't want him to be sitting for two weeks. We were a little guarded early in the game. He wasn't sure where he was going to be at. I thought as the game went on, he grew more confident. He hasn't played a ton of football, so if you miss a week you are going to be a little rusty."
  • Bo was asked about a comment Taylor Martinez made after the game, where he talked about how he wanted to show everyone that this was his team. When Bo was asked about how he felt Taylor making a comment like that, he said he didn't know about that comment, but said "That's the attitude every guy should have."
  • Conversely, when the question was asked to senior offensive tackle D.J. Jones how he felt about it, he said he hadn't heard about it, but quickly put it behind him, saying "next question."
  • Carl Pelini on Aggie offense: "What they do and what Sherman did at the NFL is stress you with formations. It's very complex. It's simple for them but complex to defend. He has a good mind. He knows how to exploit you."
  • A lot of angst around the Husker fan base about officials that may or may not be a little biased in doing their job. But there is at least one area where Defensive Coordinator Carl Pelini thought they were doing well. And that had to do with allowing defenses to substitute when offenses are running those super tempo offenses like you see with Oklahoma. And it seems the only thing limiting how fast they snap the ball is how fast the ref can get it down. "I think the big 12 refs have been good at allowing you to match personnel," Pelini said.
  • On the moving of sophomore linebacker Eric Martin to defensive end from linebacker, that's obviously a big difference in what you are being asked to do. Carl Pelini said that he was confident Martin would get it at some point. But he couldn't say when. "It's a big transition going from a two point stance to a three point stance. I knew he would be a heck of a pass rusher," Pelini said, continuing to say that in regard to complexity differences between the two, In terms of assignments, Pelini said it isn't harder on the line, but in terms of reaction, he said it is."
  • Talking to junior receiver Brandon Kinnie, he said he's really looking forward to heading down to College Station for the first time. And he's also looking forward to catching up with an old friend. Junior cornerback Coryell Judie played at Fort Scott Junior College when Kinnie was there. And Kinnie remembered a lot of times they faced off. Judie ranks in the top seven in the conference in interceptions with three on the year thus far. In addition Judie is the Aggies' top return man, boasting a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown this year. He has another touchdown on returns as well.
  • Talking to linebacker Alonzo Whaley, he said he has had anywhere from 60 requests on up for tickets. He grew up about half an hour from Texas A&M. And it did come down to the Huskers and the Aggies for his services. So, he's looking forward to it for that, but said that it's another game they need to win.
  • P.J. Smith talked a bit about it, but was obviously asked about how he has adjusted to not being the starter. P.J. said that after his last game starting, he was in the film room for about an hour immediately following the game (Texas, I believe), trying to see what they did wrong. He said it' was a bit of a gut wrencher to hear he wasn't starting after that, but now all he is focused on is getting his "Blackshirt" back.
  • Wide Receiver Michael McNeill was up and he was asked about Taylor Martinez' comments after the game where he said he wants people to see that this is his team. Michael is a fifth-year senior, so he is savvy in how he says things. That said, he was glad that Martinez took that attitude. He thought that was the attitude a player should have. Just from a personal standpoint, though, I could see how someone of his experience wouldn't immediately warm to the idea of a freshman making those statements, even if they believe them. But if Martinez keeps progressing, I don't see a problem with that down the line.
