McGinnis talks recruiting

Derek McGinnis is about to get a bit of a summer break, finally. It will be the middle of July and McGinnis will be wrapping up his fourth camp. Just a week ago though his performance really opened some eyes and an offer was being discussed. Could an offer be around the corner for McGinnis?

Derek McGinnis just wrapped up his third camp recently. The quarterback from Crete (Nebr.) said that he got a good chance to show his skills and that an offer might find a way to him at some point.

"I went up to North Dakota State a week or so ago," McGinnis said. "Things went well up there. I was only up there for a day. I worked out as a quarterback. I stood out in seven on seven.

"I spoke to Coach Craig Bohl after camp about my performance and their situation at quarterback. He said that there is an offer out to another quarterback right now, but if he doesn't accept I could get the offer."

North Dakota State came after camps at both Iowa and Nebraska. McGinnis came away pretty disappointed with one performance and pretty happy with the other.

"I went to Iowa and Nebraska before North Dakota State. I didn't get as many reps at Iowa as I would have liked. There weren't a lot of receivers there to throw to so I didn't get too many reps.

"At Nebraska I thought that I played good. I got a lot of reps and did well. I only went there for a day and I spoke to some of the coaches there. I got some good work in."

McGinnis got a chance to meet with the head coach at Nebraska following his camp. McGinnis was offered some words of encouragement about how he plays the position and about his upcoming season.

"I spoke to Coach Bo Pelini actually after the camp. He said that I was a good player and that I just need to keep working. He said that they were going to be watching me this season, but I don't know."

There is another camp coming up for McGinnis this week and then after that McGinnis will have some time to work out. "I am going to South Dakota State later this week and then I am done for the rest of the summer."

McGinnis has been spending as much time as he can this summer trying to improve his speed. He says that he tries to get into the weight room multiple times a day and gets up to the field to run on top of that.

"I am definitely working on my speed. I have been trying to get into the weight room twice a day and then I am doing running as well."

McGinnis is a 6-foot-3 and 200-pound senior from Crete who claims a 4.7/40-yard dash. McGinnis also claims a 250-lb bench press and 26-inch vertical jump.
