LB Is One of the Best

One of the best linebackers we've seen on film in the early going this year is Corona (Calif.) Centennial's Ryan Phipps. As good as he looked on film, we still didn't expect the talented 'backer to perform as well as he did at the SoCal Nike camp earlier in the month.

Phipps, 6-0, 200 pounds plays for one of the strongest programs in Southern CA. His team won a CIF Championship a year ago and Phipps led the team in tackles with 172 to earn All-League and All-Inland Empire honors.

Hawaii offered a scholarship early in the process and Phipps is hearing from most of the Pac 10 as well as Colorado, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Boston College, Kansas and Michigan. We always say recruiting really gets going May 1 when players can start receiving phone calls and our guess is Phipps phone line should be very busy for the next couple of days.

At the Nike Camp, Phipps was rated as one of the top three 'backers of the day after running a 4.50 in the 40, 4.00 in the shuttle, jumped 31 inches in the vertical and did 16 reps on the bench. He was even more impressive in the position drills showing great athletic ability and covered very well in the one on one drills.

Right now, Phipps has a solid top five of USC, Arizona State, Nebraska, UCLA and Oregon.

He's carrying a 3.75 GPA and will have no issues at all in terms of qualifying.
