It starts with 4-star wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp and Lombard Montini tonight against Palatine. Westerkamp is going for his third state title in a row and Montini is ranked No. 1 in 5A.
"I can't wait. We've really put in a lot of hard-work and sweat for this game. It's my senior year so I want to get off to a great start tomorrow," said Westerkamp. "The team has really prepared itself for this game. We had a great summer. I worked hard in the weight room to put on muscle and increase the speed so I just can't wait to play tomorrow."
Westerkamp isn't the only Nebraska commitment playing on Friday night. So is Sam Cotton and Lincoln Southeast. They will do battle against Kansas State commitment Tay Bender and Lincoln Southwest. Finishing 10-2 last season, Southeast started the year with a 19-14 win over Southwest, who finished 5-5. Bender was thought to be a target of Nebraska's, but the high school quarterback shared his desires to play the position in college.
In Colorado, Arvada West and Paul Thurston, coming off a 6-5 year, open with Longmont. The two faced off last season to open the season, with West winning 38-7.
Nebraska''s first commitment, Michael Rose, will try to help Rockhurst start their season off in style, in a game against Blue Spring. The two met to start the season last year in a defensive battle, with Rockhurst squeaking out a 7-6 victory.
"If it was possible to tweet how hyped I am for tomorrow, I would tweet about it," said Rose on his Twitter page Thursday night.
Down in Texas, Big Red Report projected quarterback commitment Tommy Armstrong and Cibolo Steele open with Madison, home of Nebraska running back Aaron Green. Two met last season to start the year, with Armstrong and company coming out on the losing side. Steele opened the season 1-2 in 2010, before rattling off 13 straight wins to win a state title.
"Game day is tomorrow...I have been through hell and back with my boys...We are ready to fight the fight...My last year as a Steele Knight, but we are going out with a bang," said Armstrong on his Facebook page.
Plenty of other Nebraska targets will start their seasons tonight. Check by to Big Red Report for a full wrap up tonight and tomorrow.
