Shields set for NU visit this weekend

Shavon Shields is the son of former Husker and NFL Hall of Famer, Will Shields, and he will be in Lincoln this weekend for an official visit. Shavon does play guard, like his father, just in another sport. He also plays forward too. Shields, a standout basketball player from Olathe (Kans.) Northwest, will make the trip this weekend to Lincoln with his mother.

College football is here and with that comes official visitors. This official visitor will be there to watch the Cornhuskers on the football field, but he's being recruited to play another sport.

Shavon Shields, a 6-foot-6 and 210-pound shooting guard or small forward, says that his official visit is this weekend. He has some ideas about what he will be doing this weekend while in Lincoln.

"My visit is this weekend," Shields said. "I get to meet the players and talk to the players and I am looking forward to that. We are going to have dinner the first night, going to the football game on Saturday and the basketball players have open gym that weekend. It should be fun."

Shields isn't traveling alone, but father Will Shields isn't making the trip this weekend. Shavon is bringing his mom who actually attended Nebraska like his father.

"She's been doing a lot of traveling and I haven't had a chance to sit down and talk to her about the upcoming weekend a lot yet. My parents went to school there so she already knows a lot about the school and the area. She's not from Nebraska originally."

Shields had been working on trimming his list and he knew before he formally trimmed his list that Nebraska was going to make the cut. That being said he couldn't venture a guess about whether or not he might commit this weekend.

"I really don't know. I need to sit down with my parents and talk about that. I am not sure if I would commit this weekend while I was on the trip or not."

Shields averaged 17 points per game last year for his high school team which was knocked out in sub-state play. Shields also plays AAU basketball for Mo-Kan Elite.
