"Solid as a rock"

It was the season opener in Lincoln yesterday and beyond the 40-7 victory the Huskers also hosted their first official visitor of the 2011-12 season. Deion Jones, who is also Nebraska's most recent verbal commitment, was in Lincoln for the first time. What did he come away impressed with while he was in Lincoln?

Deion Jones has already had a long day. Jones caught up with Big Red Report from the Kansas City airport before boarding a plane set for New Orleans to take him back home.

"I am at the Kansas City airport," Jones said. "We left really early from Lincoln. We are flying out of Kansas City. We few into Kansas City too and Nebraska came here and picked us up.

"Typically it sounds like the trip from Kansas City to Lincoln is about two hours or so, but there has been some flooding through here. We had to take some alternate routes to get here and it took a little longer."

Jones is out early this morning because he was able to get to Lincoln on Friday. He said that there were a lot of team oriented things that he was able to take part in on Friday as well as meet some of the coaches.

"I got in on Friday and I was able to attend team meetings, ate with the team, met some of the coaches like Corey Raymond and Ross Els. I also went to the team movie that night."

On game day he was up early and working with the team again. He caught breakfast, meetings, was down on the field with the team during warm ups then it was back into the locker room. He was able to also do the tunnel walk.

"On Saturday I had breakfast with the team and the coaches. I went to team meetings again and I was with the team in the locker room before the game.

"I was able to go through the tunnel walk. I was amazed by how many people already knew who I was. I really liked that about Nebraska. Everyone knew my name. It was amazing."

Jones came away impressed with Lincoln and the school, but also thought that the on the field performance by Nebraska was solid. He thought that he could see himself playing any of the three linebacker positions for Nebraska.

"I thought that it was a real good game for Nebraska. I can see myself playing linebacker there, probably outside, but I think that I could play inside too if they wanted me to. They play with real high intensity."

Jones committed to Nebraska sight unseen and ahead of possibly pulling down offers from the likes of LSU, Alabama and other SEC schools. Now that he has seen Nebraska can he consider himself a solid commitment?

"Yes sir, solid as a rock."

Jones said that he and his family are going to start talking about getting up to Nebraska again later in the season for an unofficial visit. Nothing is set though. "We don't know right now. We were talking about it and are going to look into doing so."

Jones said that he and his team had a solid performance on Thursday night. "We played on Thursday night and won 28-13. I finished the game with 13 tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery."
