DT Carlos Watkins Profile
The nation's No. 11 defensive tackle, who hails from Chase High School in Forest City, N.C., will make his choice public following Friday night's homecoming game against St. Jude.
Watkins carried a final four of Clemson, Florida, Alabama and South Carolina, but recently narrowed his focus down to the Tigers and Gators.
Clemson was first to offer, and defensive tackles coach Dan Brooks has built a solid relationship with Watkins over the last several months. Proximity helps the Tigers' efforts, too.
Of the SEC schools that have been on Watkins, Florida has consistently been among his favorites. Bryant Young, an All Pro defensive tackle with the San Francisco 49ers, serves as the Gators' defensive tackles coach. Playing under Young increased Florida's appeal.
Watkins has also developed a solid rapport with special teams coach D.J. Durkin
The 6-foot-4, 280-pound senior visited Clemson twice last month on unofficial visits before making an official trip to Florida earlier this month.
In May, Watkins told CUTigers.com that Clemson would receive heavy consideration because of the early interest they showed in him.
"They're always going to be on top, because that was my first offer. That's the reason why they're on top," he said.
Watkins had a few things to consider as he went through the recruiting process.
"I'll see how like the environment that I'm in, see how I get a feel for the players and coaches, as well. Academics will have to do a lot with it," he said.
CUTigers.com will be at Chase for Friday's game, which kicks off at 7:30.
His announcement will follow shortly afterwards.
