DC Search Continues with Stoops Mum

Nebraska's defensive coordinator position is still open? What's the latest?

Lincoln, NE - If former Arizona head coach Mike Stoops knows he's the next Nebraska defensive coordinator, he's not letting on about it.

In a conversation with the Lincoln Journal Star's Steve Sipple, Stoops said he would not be commenting on any job possibilities, but is planning on coaching next season.

"I have a lot of opportunities," said Stoops.

Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini will return from recruiting on Friday to talk with the media. The Nebraska defensive coordinator position is likely to be a hot topic.

Appearing on Sports Nightly Tuesday evening, Nebraska athletic director and former head coach Tom Osborne gave his head coach a ringing endorsement.

"Bo knows defense. Bo will know exactly what he wants to do there. He'll make a good decision," said Osborne. The worst thing an athletic director can do is to meddle, and to start saying, ‘Well, you need to hire this guy. You need to do this. Do that.' "

Osborne went on to say that opening up the checkbook and paying a high-profile defensive coordinator would not guarantee wins and that there is living proof of it.

Pelini and Osborne discussed the opening during a Capital One Bowl function last week.
