Best Available Texas Defenders

Who are the top players left who have yet to make a verbal commitment? With only one remaining official visits left before National Signing Day, Fox Sports Next has a list of the best players still available on the defensive side of the ball.

LB Dalton Santos – 6-2, 240 (Van HS, Van)
Once committed to Oklahoma State and more recently Tennessee, Santos still has one more weekend to choose where he might end up. Originally he was scheduled for a trip to Ohio State, but Texas came through with an offer. No he will take the final visit to Austin.

DB Corey Thompson – 6-2, 210 (Elkins HS, Missouri City)
Just around the time with former Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman was being relieved of his duties, Thompson started making some plans to venture to places outside of College Station. Nebraska was able to get him on campus along with LSU. Word is the Oklahoma State trip scheduled for this weekend could be cancelled. Instead he will make his way back to College Station giving the program he is committed to a chance to make the final impression.

DB Daje Johnson – 5-10, 180 (Hendrickson HS, Pflugerville)
Somewhat similar situation for Johnson as is with Santos. Of course, at this time, the Central Texas area speedster, who is committed to TCU, does not hold an offer from the Longhorn coaching staff. But he has decided to make the short trip to Austin for an official visit. In the latest update with Fox Sports Next, Johnson alluded to the fact that if an offer were to come, he would likely jump on it.

DT Aaron Curry – 6-3, 272 (Fossil Ridge HS, Keller)
Ranked No. 22 in the country at his position, Curry is a player unlike the others on this list in that he has not at any time made a verbal commitment. Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Boise State are some of the programs that have seen him on campus for official visits. The first three, according to the latest reports, are the finalist for his services. His decision should be coming almost as soon as you are reading this feature.

DB Edward Pope – 6-3, 175 (Carthage HS, Carthage)
Like Johnson above, Pope is a TCU commitment, but has opened the game back up. The Army All-American has already made a visit to Arkansas and is said to be visiting another SEC West school in Texas A&M this weekend.

DB Colin Blake (Brandeis HS, San Antonio)
Earlier this season, Blake made his commitment to Texas A&M. Last week, he decided that the two should part ways and decommitted. He had already been to Florida State, Oklahoma, and most recently TCU on official visits.

DE Bryce Cottrell (West Senior HS, Plano)
Looks like a number of "soft" verbal commitments will be in Austin this weekend. And the Oregon defensive end commitment will be right there on the scene. Cottrell picked up an offer this week from Texas, which makes things more interesting in the home stretch in recruiting.
