Although he played mostly wide receiver in high school, Heard said he'll be used initially on defense as a safety.
"(The coaches) told me to get familiar with the defense first and that offense will come," Heard said. "They do want me to play both ways."
Heard said his coaches at MLK substituted him on defense if the opposing team's wide receiver was talented enough.
He said his understanding of the receiver position makes him a more-than-capable defensive back.
"It's more of my covering technique," Heard said. "People try to jam all day not noticing that the receiver can get an edge if you make the wrong jam. I just watch and wait on the receiver to run their route."
Heard, who is rated a 2-star receiver, committed on his official visit last weekend.
"I like the facilities and the school," Heard said. "It's just right. I like the coaches most of all. They make me feel welcomed there."
