Offers rolling in for Mathis

After making an early commitment to Washington last October, Upland (Calif.) defensive end Joe Mathis has since backed off his early pledge and his recruitment has really started to blow up in recent weeks.

Joe Mathis has had a great off-season working hard in the weight room and landing a new scholarship offer almost daily.

"I love how recruiting is going," Mathis said. "I committed way too early the last time so this time around, I'm going to take my time, take all my visits and make sure I'm doing the right thing. This is a big off-season for me so I actually decided to not play basketball so I could focus on training for our season. I'm lifting hard and running every day to try to get bigger and more explosive.

"I'm up to 250 pounds now and I'm right at 6-4 so I'm feeling strong. I'm running in the high 4.6 range in the 40 too so my speed is getting better. I drop weight in the summer when our team starts to work out so I'm trying to bulk up now so I'll still be a good, solid playing weight when the season gets here."

Indiana was the first school to offer Mathis, followed by the Huskies last year. UCLA, Colorado, San Diego State, Oregon State and Washington State have since followed suit with the Beavers and Cougars both offering on Wednesday.

"I'm going to USC's Junior Day Sunday and they sound really interested too," Mathis said. "I've been talking with Coach O [Ed Orgeron] and he said they're really excited about me and it would be incredible to get an offer from USC. Some other schools showing interest are Oklahoma, Tennessee, San Jose State, LSU, Alabama, Oregon and a few others.

"Right now, my top schools are Tennessee, USC, UCLA and Washington. I really like the SEC so Tennessee stands out. USC is a school I've always liked growing up, I have a good relationship with the UCLA coaches and Demetrice Martin and I like the new Husky coaches and I've heard great things about Tosh Lupoi, the new DL coach.

"I'm going to UCLA's Junior Day and I'm going to try and make it to Washington's too. I'm also really close with Chris Hawkins and Tahaan Goodman, we're all best friends and we may visit San Diego State together. If possible, we would love to go to the same college, we talk about that all the time."

Editors Note- Since talking with Mathis Wednesday night, he picked up another offer from Oklahoma on Thursday morning.
