Deon Mix from Batesville (Miss.) South Panola isn't playing a winter sport, but that doesn't mean that he's taking any time off either. He has been putting in his work and plans on going out for a spring sport in the coming months.
"I am just working out right now," Mix said. "I am going to do shot put this spring. I have never done it before. They just want me to do something in the spring to stay active."
Mix was supposed to go to a junior day today, but he had to take a standardized test this weekend. Other than that though his only other plan is getting ready for a Nike combine next month.
"The junior day for Mississippi State was today, but I had my ACT so I couldn't go. I have the Nike combine next month in Mobile. Other than that, I am just going to be working out getting ready for next season."
There are a couple of areas that Mix says he has been focusing on when it comes to his workouts. "I want to improve my leverage and my hands. I want to stay lower and stay on them better this coming year. We have a cage that I do that helps me stay low. I am doing that every day."
There are seven offers on the table for Mix at the moment. All seven of the offers are coming either from SEC schools or from Big Ten teams. "I have offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Southern Miss, Alabama, Auburn, Purdue and Nebraska. Oregon and Tennessee are both looking at me."
Mix says that academics are a big part of his college choice. He is also looking for the overall fit. Distance may not play a big part in his decision, but ultimately there would be some comfort going to a school that is closer to home.
"I am looking at which school has the best business college. I am also looking at where I fit in the best. I want to feel at home wherever I go.
"I know that most of my offers are in the SEC and staying home is important in a sense, but I would rather be away. That would keep me away from trouble. Then again, I would like to stay close to family."
Mix is a big body that moves like a smaller body. Mix is 6-foot-5 and 305-pounds and he says that while he is athletic that he is trying to get better at everything. He believes that there is always room for improvement.
"I'm athletic for my size. I really got better this past year at staying low, but I need to keep improving in every area. I thought that I got better in pass blocking skills too, but I need to continue to improve."
One of the schools that have given Mix an offer is Nebraska. Nebraska might also be the school that is the furthest away from Batesville (Miss.) to offer Mix. One advantage that Nebraska has over other schools is ties back through a former player.
"I am friends with Jamarcus Hardrick. He is from Batesville and graduated in 2007. We actually go to the same church. He told me that the coaches at Nebraska talk about me all the time. He said that he would take me around campus up there.
"Nebraska is a physical team at the level of the SEC teams. They have always stood out to me because of how they played even before Jamarcus went there."
