OL Montelus Discusses "Golden Letter"

Notre Dame went into the northeast to offer Everett (Mass.) High offensive lineman John Montelus, and he spoke to IrishEyes.com about the offer, and how much contact he has had with Notre Dame.

Everett (Mass.) High offensive lineman John Montelus has seen his recruitment explode recently, and because of it he unknowingly delayed getting an offer from Notre Dame.

Because he is getting so much recruiting mail these days, a letter from Notre Dame came Monday, but he didn't get it open until Tuesday.

"I opened it and got the golden letter," Montelus said. "When you get the golden letter I guess you have to call and they tell you they offered you, so I called (Tuesday) and got it."

The 6-foot-5, 295-pound Montelus is impressed with what the Irish offer academically and athletically, and he is hoping to visit in the near future.

"I know they're really good in academics," he said. "I don't know anything about their coaches, but I want to visit there soon. Academics are a big factor for me."

Montelus called Irish assistant Bob Diaco, who delivered the news. It was the first time the two talked, but the Irish have been scouting Montelus for a while.

In fact, Notre Dame stopped by Everett High during the winter visitation period.

"(Diaco) was actually surprised I called because this was really the first time I was really talking to them," Montelus said. "He sounds like a normal guy."

Montelus recently saw his offer list grow to 15. The Irish join the likes of Boston College, Michigan, Florida, Nebraska and Ohio State to offer.

"During April vacation I'm going down to Florida, so I'm going to visit Florida," Montelus said. "I'm probably going to visit South Florida."

Montelus doesn't plan on making a decision until after his senior season, but he wants to trim his suitors to a manageable number after the summer.

"I'm probably going to have a top seven, or a top five, after the summer," he said. "Right now I'm just trying to focus on (readying for) my high school football season."
