"Big Red Weekend" slated for June

In a move to get more elite prospects on campus, Nebraska will host an "invite only" junior day on June 16th called "Big Red Weekend."

Lincoln, NE - Last month Nebraska recruiting coordinator Ross Els told Big Red Report plans were in the works to get recruits on campus during the summer months.

After hearing rumors and confirming with a source earlier in the week, Els told us on Thursday about the "Big Red Weekend" which will be held June 16th.

Delton Williams has confirmed he will attend "Big Red Weekend"
"We wanted to come up with a set time to attract the best of the best. It's the very top kids we are recruiting, a special invite only, rather than saying anytime you want to show up this summer show up," said Els. "Now they can still show up whenever they want, we will take them, but tried to get a large group together.

"We are inviting quite a few, but the million dollar question is how many will show up."

The hope is Nebraska will have anywhere from 12-15 prospects on campus, but they are not worried about a set number. The Huskers will call it a successful weekend even if only two prospects show up who might not planned to see Lincoln this summer.

"It's just another way to try to get guys on campus, because once we do that they absolutely love the place. We have to get them on campus," said Els. "We are giving it a shot this year and hopefully it will be a yearly thing for us – we might even expand on it as years go on."

So why just for the elite and not like junior days earlier in the year?

"You don't want it so big so you can't individualize it. That is why we are limiting it," said Els. "But you want the group there so kids are talking to each other saying, 'this is pretty unique' and his buddy can say 'yeah this is pretty special.'"

So far Big Red Report has confirmed Delton Williams, a three-star linebacker with a handful of offers has committed to attend "Big Red Weekend."
