Huskers showing interest

Nebraska is putting in a lot of time and effort not only on the 2013 class, but also the 2014 class. Defensive tackle is a big need in every class and with Nebraska re-dedicating their efforts to nail down that 250-mile radius of Lincoln an offer could show up to this 2014 recruit at any time.

Peyton Newell is a player that Nebraska fans need to get familiar with. Newell is a 6-foot-3 and 270-pound recruit with 4.85/40 speed who could play anywhere from tight end to defensive end to defensive tackle possibly.

"Things are going good," Newell said. "I got my first offer from TCU and then I was offered by Iowa, Baylor and Illinois. Yesterday I got an offer from UCLA so the process is really starting to get fun.

"There are a lot of calls coming in to my coach that I know about. It's exciting. It's really started to pick up since I got that first offer at TCU."

Newell plays defensive end in high school but so far all of the interest that he's received has been at another position and playing that other position really depends on the size that he could add to his frame.

"I think that all of the teams like me as a defensive tackle or another spot on the defensive line. I prefer defensive end. I play defensive end now.

"I would play wherever the coaches put me and I could see myself playing defensive tackle. It would really depend on my weight I think."

If you see a picture of Newell you will see that he's put together. You have to watch his film though to really appreciate his abilities. Newell is very quick off the snap of the football and relentless in his pursuit.

"I think that I have good physical strength. I come off the ball well; I am always the first one off of the line. I would also say my motor. Every coach we have spoken to has told me that their motor impresses them the most."

Newell is having a bit of a snowball effect when it comes to offers. TCU offered and since then he's starting to pick up steam. There are a number of teams according to Newell that he thinks could offer soon.

"I have a lot of schools that are showing me interest that I think could be offering me soon. I would say Kansas, Kansas State, Stanford, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Illinois and Texas Tech."

There is another team though that has started to generate interest in Newell. He was supposed to head up for a camp this summer, but he already had plans that weekend.

"I know that we were going to go to camp in Lincoln, but it's the same day as one of my team camps. I am planning on just getting up there for a day this fall.

"Nebraska is showing quite a bit of interest as well. They have produced some very good players that have gone onto have a lot of success in the NFL.

"I live in the far northeast corner of Kansas and I have some teachers that are Husker fans and they are always talking about the football program at Nebraska. They have told me that the football facilities are great at Nebraska."
