Huskers make first offer

Many Nebraska fans are impressed with Nebraska's efforts on the recruiting trail for the 2013 class, but what has also been impressive have been their efforts for the 2014 class. There are a lot of offers out to 2014 players including one to the likely top quarterback in the state of Texas next year.

Jerrod Heard from Denton (Texas) Guyer will only be a junior next year, but the past month and a half or so has been a glimpse at the recruiting process. Heard said that he took note of all of the schools that came by to see him, but he hasn't really started considering any schools at all.

"It was good to see all the schools coming by," Heard said. "It's my first chance to see the process and I have really just been enjoying it, taking it in. I am not really evaluating the schools or doing that yet, but I am watching all the schools taking a look at me."

There was a one offer that came out of the process. The Huskers stepped up and offered and Heard says that the offer from Nebraska was great, but the fact that he knows that he will have a chance to play college football is an accomplishment in itself.

"Nebraska was my first offer. It feels amazing to know that you have the opportunity to play college football. It's really an accomplishment."

Heard has time before he will sign with any school on letter of intent signing day, but he's given thought about what he will be looking for already in a school. Heard says that the offense a school runs will weigh a lot into his decision.

"I will be looking at the school itself, the academics, my major and the offense that they football team runs. I can go under center, drop back, spread it out and operate out of a shotgun. I just like playing the game of football.

"I am a dual threat quarterback. We do a little bit of everything, but I get a chance when a play breaks down to use my feet and look downfield to try and make a play out of it. Also we do some read option reading either the nose or the end."

The summertime is here and Heard says that he will start with looking at schools in the state of Texas and after that he will take a look at schools outside the border. Heard says that his high school coach and father will do the rounds this summer and Nebraska is one of the places he would like to visit.

"I want to hit all of the local schools for either camps or unofficial visits. My dad and coach would like to start looking at schools outside the state of Texas and that will start this summer.

"I would like to go look at Nebraska of course, LSU, Arizona State, Arizona, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State this summer."

The offer from Nebraska is a big one for Heard. He says that he doesn't know a lot about Nebraska except that they do develop a lot of players and put them in the pros.

"The fact that they are the first to offer me is a great feeling. It's a great school. I know that they produce great players there."
