So, Big Red Weekend was born and by the looks of it there will be a lot of solid 2013 players in Lincoln next weekend. Nebraska will also host at least one 2014 prospect when Parrker Westphal, a cornerback from Bolingbrook (Ill.) comes to town next weekend.
"I am going to visit Nebraska on June 16th," Westphal said. "Coach Ross Els invited me to come up that weekend. He said that it would give me a great chance to check out the campus."
This will be Westphal's first chance to get to Lincoln and see Nebraska. He has a pretty broad based list of things that he wants to see when it comes to Nebraska.
"I definitely want to see the facilities, the stadium and the field, their indoor facilities, and I also want to check out what they have to offer academically."
Westphal recently picked up an offer from Nebraska. He said that Nebraska had shown so much interest up to formally offering the highly touted junior that both he and his coach thought that they already had a Nebraska offer.
"I picked up an offer from Nebraska last week I think. It was kind of weird. My coach and I already thought that I had an offer from Nebraska, but I was excited to finally get it."
Westphal is up to a baker's dozen offers, but this is just the beginning. Remember, Westphal will only be a junior so it's way to early to start narrowing things down now and trimming his list.
"I am up to 13 offers right now and they are really from big schools. I am not favoring anyone right now. I have two more years to go and I am not about to start narrowing it down yet."
Westphal says that when he does get ready to make a college decision that it will be determined by academics first. After that he will start to look at the team like the defense and if the team can contend for a national title.
"My college decision will be about academics, the graduation rate of the football players, whether or not the team is a national championship contender and I am also going to look at the defense."
The offer from Nebraska is pretty new and Westphal remembers what he immediately thought about after he received the offer. It wasn't about the Blackshirts. It wasn't about national championships. It was about a former Nebraska Cornhusker.
"When I think about Nebraska and the offer from Nebraska I immediately think about Prince Amukamara. He's a shut down cornerback and I like to play that way as a cornerback too."
