Four-star CB Noel Ellis from Edna Karr committed to Texas A&M on the heels of a trip to Knoxville to check out Tennessee. Ellis visited College Station shortly before the Tennessee trek. His father, Noel Ellis, Sr., said "Ellis Island" will not camp with any other schools this summer. Ellis got good news this week, too, when he was invited to Gridiron Kings in Florida. Coach Marcel Yates did an outstanding job of recruiting him to Texas A&M.
St. Charles Catholic LB Luke Jackson (6-3, 210) pulled the trigger in favor of Tulane. Jackson has been timed at 4.57 in the 40. He was part of a punishing defense that allowed only six points per game en route to the 2011 Class 3A state title. Jackson's teammate, DT Taylor Cochran, has a couple of FCS offers - and wants a Tulane offer. The Green Wave signed '12 RB Lazedrick Thompson out of St. Charles.
Amite, which finished as 3A runner-up to St. Charles Catholic, is home to WR Jervenski Johnson (6-5, 190). Johnson got an offer from Arkansas this week and promptly pledged his services to the Razorbacks. He suited up for 5A Ponchatoula in 2011.
Louisiana Tech got verbals from Parkway DT Antonio McGhee and St. Amant DE Nicholas Bickham (6-4, 235). At 6-0 and approximately 280 pounds, McGhee is a tackle in the mold of current Bulldog Tyler Porter, although Porter was 20 to 30 pounds heavier than McGhee when he graduated from Northside HS in Lafayette.
'12 RB Brandon Wilson (Calvary Baptist) committed to Houston and will sign next week. Wilson was scheduled to attend Tyler Junior College before the Cougars wooed him. Houston has been very active in Louisiana this spring under first-year coach Brandon Middleton. Last year, Middleton coached at Evangel Christian, the arch-rival of Calvary Baptist in south Shreveport.
Brother Martin offensive lineman Ryan Hoefeld had a very nice week, pulling in offers from Florida State and Arizona. The Wildcats had already been recruiting Hoefeld, and Coach Calvin Magee confirmed that an offer is on the table. Hoefeld camped with Florida State and was an instant hit with Seminoles' o-line coach Rick Trickett.
Evangel Christian LB X'Zavier Preston has offers from Oregon State, Memphis, Houston and more, according to Kelly Morris of the Shreveport Times. Preston had a huge game against Catholic-New Iberia and QB Joe Lissard in the 2011 Class 2A quarterfinals. Lissard hadn't thrown an interception in seven weeks until Preston picked him off twice.
Tulane offered O.P. Walker OLB Lyn Clark (pictured below, right, with Darian Claiborne), who said it's "only a matter of time before I commit." The Green Wave is also after O.P. Walker DL Corey Smith (6-7, 245). The Chargers have a sleeper to watch in 6-3, 190-pound senior free safety Bobbie Temple.
Dutchtown defensive lineman David Elias nabbed a ULM offer. That's No. 4 for Elias, who could play end or tackle in college.
Tulane offered '15 safety Hunter Dale from John Curtis Christian. Dale (6-0, 175) plans to camp with Arizona State later this summer. He and RB Nicholas Brossette (U-High) are the only two '15 prospects in Louisiana that have offers. LSU offered Brossette.
Four-star LB Darian Claiborne (Port Allen) is scheduled to visit Nebraska this weekend as part of a huge recruiting event for the Cornhuskers. Full Nebraska coverage on BigRedReport.com with Josh Harvey and Bryan Munson. The Cornhuskers have a commitment from '13 three-star safety Trevell Dixon (West Saint Mary HS). Will the Huskers leapfrog Texas A&M in Claiborne's eyes? Claiborne camped with LSU last week.
Arkansas commit Deondre Skinner (Patterson) camped with Mississippi State this week. Skinner has former teammates (Kenny Hilliard and Lorenzo Phillips) at LSU. The three-star TE told Gene Swindoll (Publisher of the MSU site on this network) that he isn't ruling out LSU. If the Tigers don't land Desean Smith from Barbe, it's possible that Skinner could be next on the staff's tight end board for an offer. Smith is expected to commit to LSU, however.
John Curtis Christian three-star LB Duke Riley traveled to Starkville yesterday to visit the Bulldogs. Riley visited Ole Miss earlier this month. He's camping with LSU and Ole Miss next month. He also visited Tulane this week.
Archbishop Rummel QB Damian Williams and H-Back Cethan Carter (6-3, 240) camped with both Mississippi State and TCU. The Raiders are listed at No. 7 in our preseason 5A rankings. Both Williams and Carter have multiple offers.
6-foot-7, 335-pound OT Anthony Taylor (John Curtis) will visit Kentucky next month. The Wildcats are his favorite. He has an offer from McNeese State and should add more once he becomes more well-known to college recruiters.
Beau Chene scatback Jamal Chevis clocked a 4.28 at the Ragin' Cajuns' camp and a 4.38 at North Texas camp. Chevis (5-7, 155, Sr.) ran for 1,000-plus yards last year for the Gators. He expects offers from North Texas and a couple of other schools after his ACT score comes back. Chevis took the test for the first time recently.
'14 OT Cameron Robinson (Ouachita) was invited to participate in both the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and the Under Armour All-American Game. National Recruiting Analyst Chad Simmons says Robinson and RB Leonard Fournette (St. Augustine) will be five-star prospects.
LSU commit Josh Boutte (Westgate OL) hopes his school will hire a head coach soon. The Tigers have been without a coach since Brian Fine resigned at the conclusion of spring training. Fine, who brought Westgate to the 5A semis on multiple occasions, took another position in north Louisiana. There are reports that Vincent DeRouen will be hired at Westgate. DeRouen was relieved of his duties at Northside earlier this week in a move that shocked the prep football community across the state.
Class 3A perennial power Notre Dame of Crowley got a '13 WR transfer from the state of Texas (Marcus Garrett), according to Pioneers head coach Lewis Cook. Garrett's father, Marcus Shane Garrett, played for Texas A&M. The legendary Cook was excited about the upcoming season when I spoke to him at LSU camp.
Redemptorist lost its two senior leaders to transfer: WR Donald Gage (Houston commit) to 5A Zachary High and LB Jestin Kelly to Port Allen. Gage is pictured below.
