Martinez on Davey O'Brien list

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez is one of the 34 quarterbacks to appear on the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award list.

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez is one of the 34 quarterbacks to appear on the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award list, announced on Wednesday morning. The junior returns for his third-year under center with the Huskers.

After passing for nearly 2,100 yards in 2011, Martinez ranks sixth on Nebraska's list of top quarterbacks for career passing yards. Yet his work through the air is what seems to fuel most critics.

Martinez's offseason schedule has included multiple stops to workout with California quarterback guru Steve Calhoun. The main focus – Martinez's mechanic, primarily his footwork. It's the hope that his work not only over spring break, but during the summer with the coach, will help him become more consistent in 2012. Consistency has been Martinez's biggest achilles heel during his first two seasons under center.

"I really look forward to Taylor having a heck of a year coming up. Is he perfect? No. No one is, but he is growing and has made strides in the spring," said Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini on the Big Ten Network. "I think he really worked on some things technique wise and fundamentally that are going to make him a better football player, but in the end it will be, can he take those things to the field in the fall? Can he use the offense to his advantage?"

Other Big Ten quarterbacks appearing on the list include: James Vanderberg - Iowa, Braxton MillerOhio State, Denard RobinsonMichigan, and Nathan ScheelhaaseIllinois.
