Some schools start up on Monday and that means that practice is in full-swing. Kyle Peko, a 6-foot-2 and 295-pound defensive tackle from Norwalk (Calif.) Cerritos College says that he had practice already today and that his team came just short from playing in state last year.
"I just got out of practice," Peko said. "We had an early practice today. It's good to be out there. We are excited. We are going to trying to go to state this year. We have a solid team. We lost the game before state last year in the last minute actually."
Watching film of Cerritos to catch a glimpse of Peko is a chore. He is literally lined up all over the defensive line from one down to the next and will continue to be this season.
"I am going to be all over. I am going to be out from nose tackle to defensive end. I played the seven last year too. Last year we needed help at all positions, but I think that it's a little about just moving me around. I really don't know."
While Peko will be used all over the defensive line this fall he says that he's hearing and thinks that he really projects better to one position for DI ball. "I think that I am best as a defensive technique, three-technique. I am just quick and have speed off of the ball to slice through the gap."
There are a dozen offers on the table for Peko who says that he was close to taking an unofficial visit to one of the 12 schools just a couple of weeks ago. Things are changing though as they get closer to the season and teams are jockeying for a chance to host Peko officially this fall instead.
"I have 12 offers now. I haven't talked to a lot of schools yet about visits, but I was going to take one to Texas Tech for an unofficial visit not too long ago. They wanted to wait until during the season and mostly everyone wants to wait to bring me out for a game."
Peko thinks that he will take at least three of his five official visits and there are three schools standing out right now. "I don't know about five but there are three that are pretty solid on my list. I would say Texas Tech, Michigan State and Nebraska are the three schools I would consider visiting."
The third team on Peko's list, Nebraska, is a new one. Peko just picked up the offer from Nebraska and literally has never spoken with any of the coaches from Nebraska. That was scheduled to change later today and he says that he would love to visit Lincoln.
"I just got the Nebraska offer. It was surprising. I never even talked to them before. I got an official offer letter in the mail last week. I got a card of the coach that asked me to call them. I am going to call them later today.
"There isn't anything hurt by Nebraska offering me later than the other schools at all. I think that they are a great team and I would love to take a visit up there. The letter and the card that I got were from the head coach Bo Pelini."
As a freshman Peko said that he tallied 39 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and 13 quarterback hurries. Peko says that he will be eligible to graduate in December and enroll at a school for the spring semester with three years of eligibility to play two.
