A monster inside

Many people don't think of lineman as athletes. Joe Fennell is a 6-foot-4 and 300-pound athlete that you can find anchoring both the offensive and defensive lines for Fort Myers (Flor.) South this fall.

Head Coach Grant Redhead from Fort Myers (Flor.) South has some unbelievable talent on his team this fall. That group is led by Joe Fennell. Fennell, a two-way lineman for South, is considered to be one of the top defensive tackles in the nation.

"Joe played both ways in the spring," Coach Redhead said. "We really made Joe the centerpiece of our defense because he's immoveable and he's such a force. He draws double-teams and still gets pushes up field. He still plays offense, switches every other series, but having a lineman like that doesn't come along very often."

Fennell has size, 6-foot-4 and 300-pounds, but he also the motor and the athleticism that sets the great defensive tackles apart from the good ones. Coach Redhead says that Fennell can hold his own in the box and can also make plays inside-out as well.

"His footwork makes him special. He can sit there and play in the box with the best of them, but he has great feet and he's quick. He can get down the line and make some plays. Joe moves like he's 220 and not 300. He can play either the one-technique or the three-technique. He's so versatile. He can also do guard or tackle on offense."

Joe tends to talk about a few schools, but there are others that are still being considered as well. For Joe all options need to stay open because the DI route is not guaranteed. It's not impossibility either for Fennell, but some work will be necessary for Joe to get there.

?"I have talked to Joe; Florida, South Carolina and Nebraska are some of the top teams that he likes. You still have Indiana, Marshall and Kentucky in there. Joe is working hard in the classroom and on the test and it all depends on how that process goes. He's not free and clear."

Nebraska came through to see Fennell this spring. Not one coach, but many. Coach Redhead said that Nebraska, like so many other programs, loved what they saw when they saw Fennell this spring. There are at least two coaches from Nebraska that are heading up Fennell's recruitment.

"Coach Terry Joseph from Nebraska has been recruiting and I know Coach Rick Kaczenski is also at Nebraska now too. All of the coaches from Nebraska came through this spring. Everyone loves him."
