Gaulden favoring two

The need to start recruiting players earlier and earlier is not a trend anymore it's become a way of life. Juniors are getting the attention that seniors get because it's extremely difficult for coaches to make up the ground lost over a year. This junior says that there are two standing out right now, but says that there is a long way to go with the process.

RaShaan Gaulden from Thompson's Station (Tenn.) Independence knows that he and his team could have a perfect record. What's worse is who they lost to. It's fixable though according to Gaulden who says second half letdowns are to blame.

"The season is going good so far," Gaulden said. "We lost two big games against our big time rivals. We can bounce back though. It was second half breakdowns in both games. I am playing strong safety and wide receiver."

Gaulden is a standout on both sides of the ball, but he prefers to play one over the other. The preferred position by Gaulden is also the position that many project him to play at the next level.

"I like playing defense the most. I just love hitting and making big plays. I believe that defense wins ball games. I play both strong and free safety. I prefer to play strong because I really like to be in the box."

There is more to Gaulden than just having the right size for safety at 6-foot-1 and 170-pounds. He has the mindset of a linebacker and prefers to be in the box and closer to the line of scrimmage.

"I am a heavy hitter and I never give up on a play. I am smart, have good instincts with what an offense is doing and I can react instantly."

There are already a half-dozen offers on the table for Gaulden and he says that out of the six he is already favoring two. "I have six offers right now. I am favoring Nebraska and Vanderbilt right now. I also have offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Duke."

Gaulden has taken a trip over to Vanderbilt and says that he would like to make one over to Nebraska this year. In fact, Coach Terry Joseph was talking to Gaulden about making a trip to Lincoln just last week.

"The coaches stand out most to me about Vanderbilt and Nebraska. They make me feel wanted there. That is what I am looking for in a coaching staff. I have seen the facilities at Vanderbilt and I am going to Nebraska for a game this year."

When Gaulden does get a chance to get over to Lincoln he says that getting a look at the facilities will be critical. More than that he wants to see how he fits in the defense by going through some film study with the Nebraska coaches.

"I want to see their facilities and experience their hospitality. I would also like to sit down at one of their film study sessions and see what position they want me to play and stuff like that."

While Gaulden is favoring two at the moment he says that he's even close to being ready to commit. These two teams are just who he favors now and he plans to go through the process. "Not at all, I am going to take my time with the process. Those are just my early favorites and I have another year to go through the process."
