South squad gets defensive

The combination of a stifling defense and a solid running attack, led the South squad to a 24-0 victory over the North in the 45th annual Shrine Bowl.

An estimated crowd of 6,000 watched the South defense hold the North squad to only 57 yards rushing, while limiting Kansas State-bound John McCardle of Millard North to 26 yards on 15 carries.

McCardle was also the recipient of a helmet-popping hit by the South's Caleb Berg and NU recruit Bo Ruud.

Bryan Florendo of Crete earned offensive player of the game by rushing for 110 yards on 20 carries for the South, including 3 runs of 10 yards or more. Florendo started the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run with 8:10 left in the second quarter, which capped a 16-play, 84 yard drive.

An injury to Millard West's Jake Dugger allowed Florendo, the Colorado Schools of Mines recruit, to be added to the 35-man roster

Another Nebraska recruit, Andy Birkel of Lincoln Southeast scored the games second touchdown, hauling in a 32-yard pass from Jordan Gaillard of Omaha Gross, giving the North a 14-0 advantage at halftime.

Andy Severson of Bellevue West started the scoring in the second half by hitting a 51-yard field goal giving the South a 17-0 lead.

Severson, the University of Nebraska at Omaha recruit, had three extra points and kicked the second-longest field goal in Shrine Bowl history.

Birkel capped the game's scoring with a Shrine Bowl record 86-yard interception return for a touchdown. Birkel's interception secured the South's shutout, the first since 1994.

Bellevue East's Sean Douglas was outstanding in the kicking department sending 4 of his 5 kickoffs into the end zone and averaging 48.5 yards on two punts.

Defensive MVP honors went to NU recruit Brandon Teamer, a 270-pound defensive lineman from Omaha Central.

Jordan Brill of Elkhorn led the North in passing with 138 yards, but was also intercepted twice.

Nebraska recruit Tierre Green, from Omaha Benson, left the game in the first half with a knee hyperextension.
