BRR Examines: 2013 JUCO DT

A JUCO DT seemed to be a want of the Nebraska staff before the start of the season. There were a number of offers extended to some of the top junior college defensive tackles nationally and with the unexpected departure of Chase Rome a want for a JUCO DT has turned into a definitive need for the 2013 class.

Johnson is a prospect that has been on Nebraska's recruiting radar for a long, long time. Johnson has been holding a Nebraska offer since about letter of intent signing day and he had planned on making numerous visits to Lincoln, but all of them fell through until July. Johnson finally got a chance to visit and loved his trip to Lincoln. Some might have feared that following his unofficial to Lincoln that Johnson might not come back in the fall for an official visit. Johnson told BigRedReport.com last night though he wants to see a game day environment in Lincoln and will take an official visit there. That visit could come as soon as next weekend against Idaho State. Johnson is a December graduate and will have three years to play two at the next level.

Peko is a player that in the last month or so has picked up a Nebraska offer. As a freshman at Cerritos College Peko had 39 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and 13 quarterback hurries. The Nebraska offer came as a surprise by Peko. He had never spoken to Nebraska up to the point of receiving the offer, but when he did get the offer he instantly began considering Nebraska and will take an official visit to see Lincoln. Peko is sitting at around a dozen offers right now with the other key suitors for his services seeming to be Michigan State, Texas Tech and BYU. Peko is also a December graduate and will have three years to play two.

Russell is a name that Nebraska fans might remember. As a senior in high school, Russell was a standout defensive tackle from San Antonio (Texas) Houston and took an unofficial visit to Nebraska, with Aaron Green who was a high school senior at Madison, but ended up committing to Texas. Russell then failed to qualify out of high school and here we are. Russell took an official visit to Texas Tech already and he is holding a handful of other offers including Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Baylor and TCU among others. Russell did say that he was interested taking an official visit this fall. Russell will have three years to play two.

Campbell is an interesting prospect. With his size you would project him immediately inside to the defensive line, but at East Los Angeles Campbell moves around on the defensive line from a three-technique out to a five-technique. Campbell is athletic for his size, a sub-five second 40-yard dash, and because of this versatility his value increases. Campbell is holding around 15 offers including an offer from Arkansas, Oregon State, Michigan State, Washington State, West Virginia and others. While Campbell is holding all of those other offers he told BigRedReport.com back in July that Nebraska would get an official visit. Campbell is set to graduate in December and will have three years to play two.
