Martinez earns third offensive POW

Was Taylor Martinez's big time performance also a game-changer in his progression as a quarterback going forward?

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska junior quarterback Taylor Martinez was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after his performance against Northwestern on Saturday.

The California native threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns on 27 completions, leading the Huskers' 12-point fourth quarter comeback.

It's the third time this season Martinez has won the award. He was also one of eight quarterbacks named "Stars of the Week" by the Manning Award.

"I think Taylor has played at a pretty high level all year," said Pelini on Monday. "You take away some of the plays that happened to him at Ohio State and I think he's played really well all year."

Pelini was asked if Saturday's game against Northwestern might be a defining moment in Martinez's progression as a quarterback going forward.

"I'm not sure I'd call it a game changer. Even in the fourth quarter there were some things that he'd want back and that he could do better," said Pelini. "He can continue to work on his decision-making, his checks. What I've seen from Taylor is that the more he plays and the more experience he's had, the better he's played. I hope that will continue.

"I've never lacked confidence in Taylor throwing the ball. I think he can throw it. Is he perfect? No. I usually have NFL games on in the background when I'm doing work on Sundays and as great as (Tom) Brady and the rest of those guys are, they still make mistakes. It's part of playing the position. You continually coach them and keep getting them better."
