ScoutTV: Upland Wins Out

Highlights from Friday night's Upland (Calif.) 59-39 victory over Etiwanda (Calif.), including a few plays by Scout's #14 ranked defensive end, Joe Mathis...

The stakes were high for both teams: if Upland (Calif.) nabbed the win, they would finish the regular season undefeated in undefeated in back to back years. If Etiwanda (Calif.) managed the upset, they would continue into playoffs.

Though the game went back and forth for a while, as both offenses managed to rack up a combined total of over 1000 yards, Upland rallied to clench the 57-39 victory, making them 20-0 in regular season play, as Nate Romine became 22-1 as the Scots' starting quarterback.

Romine had 309 yards for four touchdowns in the first half alone; the signal-caller finished the night going 11-18 for 361 yards and five touchdowns. Romine also showed off his run game, racking up 96 rushing yards and an additional touchdown before back-up Zac Sturdivant took over in the fourth quarter.

Highly-touted defensive end Joe Mathis, who has consistently faced double and triple coverage as his reputation as a threat on the field has grown, was forced to leave the game with an injury in the first quarter, perhaps part of the reason that Upland's defense allowed 39 points, a season high. Mathis did, however, get a safety for the Scots within the first few minutes of the game. Mathis, one of the West's top uncommitted prospect, will announce his commitment at January 5th's US Army All-American Bowl and is considering Washington, Utah, UCLA, Arizona State, Florida State, Nebraska, Hawaii, Texas A&M, and Alabama.

Cornerback Delvin Batiste (a San Diego State commit) and safety James Johnson, Jr. (an Arizona State commit) both had an impact on the field and each displayed versatility at defensive back, as well as showing off some offensive skills throughout the night. Johnson also had a pivotal red-zone pick and return in the second quarter.
