SM West Lineman Makes First Visit to Nebraska
Friday night, 2014 offensive lineman Austin Chambers paved the way as Shawnee Mission West took down Lawrence Free State 48-21, as the Vikings qualified for the Kansas Class 6A State Championship Game. "You take a step back, and you realize not many guys play for a state championship," Chambers said, reflecting on how far his squad has come. "It's a little bit of an honor. I've never played in a game like this. It's the pinnacle. I'm just excited for the opportunity." After celebrating the huge win with his teammates, Chambers tripped to Lincoln the next day to see the Huskers square off against Big 10 foe Minnesota. "I really enjoyed the game. It was really fun," Chambers said after watching Nebraska's 38-14 win over the Gophers. "I got to be down on the field during warm-ups," he said, beaming. "Just seeing the Nebraska stadium fill out for Senior Night, how the crowd supported all the players, it was pretty amazing." "The fans, all of them knowing every player's name…it was like a high school game." Chambers got to spend some time with assistant offensive line coach and native Kansas Citian John Garrison. "Coach Garrison told me they had watched my film," Chambers said, clearly excited. "He said they were very impressed with me." Since returning home from Lincoln, Chambers has focused on the Vikings' championship game matchup with Hutchinson High School. Winners of seven state titles in the last eight years, he knows all about the Salthawks. "They've mauled their opponents, offensively and defensively," he said. "Their offensive line is big and very physical. Their defensive line is fundamentally sound, they do everything right." For one of the best linemen in the Kansas City area, the opportunity to go head-to-head with the dominant program in the Sunflower State is one he relishes. "It's going to be a big battle up front. Whoever can control that is going to come out on top."
