Stretch Run

Mackenro Alexander out of Immokalee, Fla., has helped his team to the State 5A Semfinals. That is not the only thing that he is trying to accomplish as signing day grows nearer.

"I am trying to get things narrowed down in the recruiting process," added Mackenro Alexander. "It's wild with these coaches in and out of your house and trying to study film, work out, keep up your books, and going to practice everyday. I was told that things would get hectic by some of the older guys who went through the recruiting process. I kind of laughed it off, but now I see what they mean."

College coaches from around the coaches started visiting the prospects at their homes and high schools a week and half ago. Many have stopped by Alexander's home.

"Man, there have been so many schools who have been by here. I can't even name them all. Pretty much most of the SEC and ACC schools have been by here. Some big 10 schools. Big East schools. Colleges are coming from everywhere."

Mackenroe's brother, Mackensie Alexander, is also highly thought of in the recruiting ranks. That gives colleges a chance to kill two birds at once.

"Like I said, colleges are just in and out of here. I have Mississippi State in here right now. Ole Miss was by here earlier. It is like one college after another coming through our living room."

Who are the colleges that are showing the most interest?

"The main schools right now are Ole Miss, Southern Cal, Mississippi State, and Clemson. There are a lot of them, really, but those are showing me the most interest right now. They all come by weekly and things like that."

Alexander talks a little about each one.

"Ole Miss has been coming after me hard for a long time now. I like the direction they are going. I am going up there for an official in January (28th). I look forward to seeing all of their campuses and getting to meet their players. Clemson is doing really well in the ACC. They have come a long ways under their coach. I am also going to visit there in January. USC has so much tradition. I just want to get a better feel for all of these schools when I go on my visits. All four of those schools are showing me a lot of interest right now and all have a need for me. I am keeping an open mind until I take these visits."

The Immokalee safety is also trying to help his team to the 5A State Title.

"We are in the 4th round. We play Friday in the state semifinals against Jackson. It is going to be a good game. We have a great offense, and they have a great defense."

Mackenro leads his team in tackles with 125 while also chipping in 4 interceptions, 3.5 sacks, 8 pass breakups, and 4 forced fumbles.

"I think I have had a great season. I am creating a lot more turnovers on defense than I did the year before. I feel like when the ball is in the air it's mine. I am a ball hawk and I play physical."
