How does Byrne feel with having the decision out of the way?
"It feels great and I'm excited to be part of Notre Dame and all the tradition and academic opportunities they have to offer," said Byrne. "I spoke with Coach (Brian) Kelly this morning and he said he was really happy to have me and that he's heard good things about me from (assistant) coach (Harry) Hiestand.
"He also said he was excited to have me be a part of the tradition at Notre Dame and he's looking forward to me and my family coming up in the next couple of weeks to watch a practice."
While Byrne started out favoring Ohio State early in the process he felt in the end the Irish had something he was looking for.
"Coach Hiestand being my recruiting coach and also my offensive line coach allowed me a chance to get to know him really well," said Byrne. "I felt at the end of the day between any other school and Notre Dame, Coach Hiestand was going to be the person to help me be a better offensive lineman as he offers a lot of teaching styles and lots of experience."
As for the Irish gaining the edge over the Buckeyes it was a matter of checking out several programs.
"At first I started off as a really heavy Ohio State lean," said Byrne. "However, as you kind of get a look around at these other schools you kind of go away from some and go towards others. Notre Dame grew on me with each visit and I was just really impressed. I kind of knew a couple of weeks ago that I was favoring Notre Dame but wanted to take my time and evaluate all my options. But at the end of the day Notre Dame was the best fit for me."
